In a world swirling in falsehoods, poetry offers honesty. Reading a poem feels like lighting a candle in a dark room.Poets such as Rosemary Trommer, Mary Oliver, Mark Nepo, and Emily Dickinson are gifted poets whose writing offers honesty and balm for the soul.
In the short poem ahead, Emily Dickinson uses the metaphor of a bird to describe hope as a resilient, comforting presence. This little bird sings sweetly through a storm of high winds, and asks for nothing, even a crumb, in return.
Let this little bird, hope, inspire us.
Hope is the Thing with Feathers
By Emily Dickinson
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all
And sweetest in the gale is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm
I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea
Yet - never - in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
Let’s come together for a 15 minute meditation Sunday from 1-1:15PM CST. Thank you for participating! Please share this!
Thank you to the group member that contributed both the writing and the artwork!
