Dancing Around the Maypole

In May, we call in fertility, good fortune and prosperity

I swing from the summer-like end of the pendulum to the opposite polarity that Colorado has to offer. The days start and end with winter’s last bite, softened by the sun’s warmth in the middle. It was much like that on my recent hike to the Red Rocks–the wind whisked around me at the trading post so hard I zipped my puffy jacket to the top. But as we descended into the valley, all that was forgotten. I quickly shed my jacket as the sun beat down in full spring force. Hawthorn trees burst into fragrant white bloom, and prickly desert flowers graced our path. How tough and resilient they were to endure less than ideal conditions, and yet still offer their beauty to the world. May ushers us into a period of more stable sun, a time we can bloom into our radiance. Per Maypole traditions in which multi-colored ribbons are wrapped around a pole on May Day and Beltane, this is a time to harken fertility, prosperity and good fortune. As a collective we entwine our fates, and balance out the polarities of intuitive and active principles in nature to bring out our deepest potential for all to enjoy.

November Tarot Forecast 2024

November 3, 2024

1st: New Moon in Scorpio

15th: Super Beaver Moon in Taurus

28th: Thanksgiving

A Note: This month, I've chosen to use Intuiti, an Italian creativity aid deck inspired by the tarot. I've chosen the "Creative Block" spread to help readers work through what stands in the way of a creative writing project or process.

In my 20s, I once participated several times in National Novel Writing Month, a challenge to write 50k words in a month. Though I no longer feel I can dedicate this tarot forecast to that experience, it still feels relevant to address the creative spirit, and that which might stand in its way. In the creative process, motivation is an elusive thing. We receive this rare and sudden burst at the outset of the month with the New Moon in Scorpio. How to make the best use of it relies not on a single great outpouring, but on building a sustainable model to keep the fire going for a long period. Distractions and excuses threaten to impede our progress, rather than a lack of will. It is our ardent passion that motivates us to shed what does not matter. Only then can we truly devote time and energy to the creative process and do the daunting work of seeing our projects through. Only through much fashioning and removal does a project reveal its most intimate form.

As we will find on the 15th with a Super Beaver Moon in Taurus, we begin with a passion, in search of a home. Home is a practice we repeatedly turn to and commit to. It is a sense of ease and comfort we nurture between ourselves and our artistic medium. At home we feel free to express ourselves vulnerably, and reveal intimate thoughts that we can then invite our listener, viewer, or reader to. Flourishes fall away, in favor of what needs to be said, from one heart to another. Gratitude reminds us what a gift this is. Gratitude keeps us generative. In the endeavor to reach another, we reach ourselves. It leads us to define what we might otherwise leave murky and unknown within. The chill of solitude has us reach a branch out to another, and trees form a comforting underground network of roots to endure the winter ahead. The community we solidify in this time is something we’ll be able to turn to for strength in the cold months ahead.

Creative Block Spread

How I Feel: Reverse Fool

This month in our creative endeavors, it can feel that for all we’ve learned thus far, we find ourselves back at square one. We reach the extent of our knowledge, only to find that we know nothing at all. It may feel as though we are so entwined in an old way of doing things that to extract ourselves means to start all over. To eschew what we thought we knew can feel vulnerable and ungrounding, as though all prior efforts were a pretense and the artistic journey only begins now. However, there is unlimited potential regained in embodying the Fool–a restoration of childlike wonder, exploration and inspiration. We have recovered the elusive Edenic state so that many seek to reestablish. Though it is natural to want what we can’t have, a state of gratitude and appreciation will allow us to make the most of this experience. To bask in the energy of the Fool is to dance, frolic, paint and play without censorship. It is a shedding of old forms, getting back in touch with our inner fire, and entering a state of receiving. It is relearning with all the foundations we wish we’d been given before, and seeing the potential in ourselves that we would see in a child. It’s a moment to take our dreams as a real possibility and encourage them, to give ourselves the opportunity to grow.

How I’d Like to Feel: Reverse Hermit

In response to feeling like the Fool, we find ourselves wanting to feel like the Hermit. We envision the Hermit as a wisened or seasoned creator, who is able to generate and maintain a creative fire all on our own. In our eagerness to “grow up,” we want to hit the fast forward button to our success. Time in itself is not going to ground us or get us where we want to be. We can’t gain automatic wisdom, maturity or authority, though we may earn them through lived lessons. With the reverse Hermit in place, there is a risk of becoming jaded, hardened, set in our ways or locked into a single path. We are advised not to rush or hurry to get there. The inner child (ie the Fool) is a state we want to cherish throughout our creative process, even as we grow into the desired state of the Hermit. In this way, we can keep evolving as creators without reaching a standstill. In time, we find that we are the beacon we seek.

Nature of the Block: Reverse Lovers

The nature of the block is the binaristic nature of how we feel (the Fool) and how we’d like to feel (the Hermit). The two butt heads rather than working together, when we try to wrangle ourselves into an opposite path that doesn’t speak to where we truly are in the creative process. Together the Fool and Hermit could combine to make a giant flame, but when placed at odds with one another, these forces cancel each other out or at best leave a weak sputtering flame. It could also be that as the Fool, we try to embody many different paths which dilutes the choice that needs to be made in order for a creative project to flourish. When stuck in a creative block, we are called to return to self and make the choice that speaks to it, or else disengage. In time we may find there is a middle path that unites these forces, and play to each strength as creator.

What Could Help Me: 8 of Pentacles

The key to working through the creative block is consistent practice. When we are able to have our needs consistently met, we can work in a calm and steady manner. Ultimately, creation is a marathon and not a race. We want to get to a place where our creative process becomes second nature to us, so that we gain natural progress that we don’t even have to think about. The image in question is a square of circular links, which has equal light rays shining from each (as opposed to the irregular bursts of light the isolated fire in the hermit above seems to emit). Each link might be part of a multifaceted routine, with lots of entry points to lean on and shine from. The practice in itself is generative. While we are still wrestling with the nature of the creative block, it is advised not to add anything on to our plates, as we are already juggling enough and need to learn to work hard on our existing projects with familiar resources.

Bonus: The Enchanted Map Oracle by Collette Baron-Reid offers fairytale-like themes in relation to the personal journey. Below is an additional clarification card for support.

Commitment

The commitment card shows a moment of faith in which a smaller hand reaches out to a bigger hand. Magic occurs when this happens–a rainbow of opportunity, fluttering hearts and stars appear, and a key takes flight. A creative project can be seen to fruition, and a block can be overcome–but only if we commit to consistent practice. To do that, we must first define what it is we are committing to. Rather than jump headfirst into the routine of the seasoned Hermit, it is best if we establish a sustainable practice that meets us where we are. Once this is in place, the guidance we need and the creation we seek are there. Everything we need is within, if we can meet it halfway.

May 2023 Tarot Forecast

May 2, 2023

May is the 3rd month in the Roman calendar we’ve been following thus far. This month is thought to be named after the goddess Maia. She is known to be the most beautiful sister of the Pleiades, and the most timid. Maia symbolizes the concept of growth. The etymology of her name hints at working with our ancestors and that which is larger and greater. Maia is worshiped on May 1st and 15th, which ties in very well with our modern day practice of celebrating Mother’s Day on the 14th. Whether male or female, the strongest energy we can tap into this month is that of the Mother.

Energy of the Month: Reverse Knave of Wands ~Break Me Open by S. Carey~

In April, we received the 9 of cups and birthed a creation that had been in the making for nine months. Our vision became possible in a way that we never knew it would, and manifested into the physical world. This vision is still very much in its infancy and needs a lot of space and continual care in order to grow into fruition. Now that we have reached this goal–where do we go from here?

Like the Knave of Wands, we have a lot of eagerness and aptitude for learning, but its reversed position implies we are not feeling the most confident as students. This has been an arduous journey. It took a lot to get here, and our learning has come at the expense of surviving difficult experiences. We made a hard choice to end an old way of life and an old way of being. This can leave us feeling lost and wondering where to go from here. We may still be looking for the reasons, and fighting past the urge to pick up the pieces. We may feel that we are still falling and stumbling quite a bit. We want so badly to reorient ourselves and find direction and clarity.

Breathe. What we are going through is not a failure. We are breaking open–and this is something we should allow. To quote Brian Andreas: “When you start to crack open, don’t waste a moment gathering your old self into something like you knew before. Let your new self splash like sunlight into every dark place…let all your love spill out into the world.”

Love: Queen of Wands ~First to Love by Maia Friedman~

We have come a long way since last month in our relationship with platonic and romantic love, as well as the love we have for our creations. We’ve not only reopened our hearts to love, but we are proactively pursuing, protecting, and nurturing it. We are waiting for its roots to grow. Though our efforts may take multiple attempts as we head back to brighter skies, we know that will succeed and be okay. We (and our visions) are empowered to be whatever we like, knowing that love will remain by our side. Our eyes no longer flinch from the light.

Money: Temperance ~Guru by Júníus Meyvant~

In this area of life, we benefit most by working with that which is larger and greater than ourselves. This could involve working within a certain religion, with certain deities, and with our guides and ancestors. They will help us release any fears and uncertainties we have, knowing that we will be guided down a divine path that will allow us to be free. The interplay between the divine spirit and the material mundane is what will best bring abundance forward into our realities. A lot of power is given to money as the crux of our existence–the problem and the key. We want to get used to thinking of money as an energetic exchange, and one that works best when we are in a state of open flow. We want to work with patience, purpose, and moderation when we are approaching bigger, long-term goals in regards to our finances. Our guides are reminding us that a middle path is the best approach in spending and saving, and we want these dualities to work together so that we can find a fulfilling lifestyle that benefits our present and our future.

Work: Ace of Wands ~Something Good Can Work- Two Door Cinema Club~

The work we did last month allowed us to fulfill a big milestone and made us realize that now we can be a real player in the field. Last month has given us the stable foundations and this month is all about being a fearless creator and mastering the art of manifesting our internal fire. We are mobilized to make empowered choices and make things happen one action at a time. A lot has changed in terms of who we are in the workplace or what our careers look like. We are the creator that can forge our own path, limited only by our own imagination. This is the time to pursue innovation, passion projects, and taking on more creative roles and tasks. This is where we will excel and these ideas will take off and prosper.

Health: Reverse King of Pentacles ~Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby- Cigarettes after Sex~

Somewhere along the way, we equated health with our routine, the food we eat, the vitamins we take…and we got very rigid with it. It is like we are afraid to stray from the plan, for fear that we will lose a hold of the health that we worked so hard to achieve. As though something could take it away at any moment. Even if we are not in perfect health or something has come along to challenge how we think about our help, it does our bodies no good to live in a fear state. It will only keep the body from doing what it needs to in order to self regulate. Something has made us feel destabilized and it is now more than ever that we need to remember to stick to the middle path–we need not excessively care for our health nor neglect it. We need not throw excessive money at our health nor become stingy with how we invest in it. Nor should we let work and money come at the expense of our health. Health is a form of wealth, but it is not a zero sum game–it is something that can exist in abundance for all. Wherever we are, we should ground ourselves and think about the ways in which we are empowered in health.

Spirit: Reverse Three of Pentacles ~Fisher Island Sound-Beirut~

This month, something is presenting itself as an obstacle to our spiritual growth and learning. It may not feel like there are enough finances to go around for everything that we are envisioning for health and this ripples out into spirit. We may feel quite on our own right now, immersed in a solitary practice and not sure where to go from here when left with only our own resources. This is another area we could benefit from working with a higher power, spirits and guides. They are willing to help guide us towards some answers and reach a breakthrough in our learning. We must also see if there are any internal obstacles within–is there a part of us that is reluctant to move forward on our spiritual path? This is something we will want to look into in order to foster our spiritual gifts and strengthen our motivation.

The strongest flowers are the ones that grow through the cracks.

March 2023 Tarot Forecast

March 3, 2023

(Marseilles Deck)

If we continue to go by the old Roman calendar that we were following last month, we’ll see that March was the first month of the year. The month was named after the god Mars, who represents the divine masculine active principle. If February was a period of stillness and inner cleansing, March is the month of action. We can think of February as preparation for the deep spring cleaning coming up starting on March 26th. We will be asked to make difficult decisions on a literal and metaphorical level of what to keep and discard in our lives. If there are still areas of uncertainty, now would be a good time to start reflecting or journaling so that we can have greater clarity by the end of the month. We can continue to move forward in other disciplines in the meantime.

Energy of the Month: Judgment ~Black Water - Timbre Timbre~

In February, we practiced inner cleansing and wiped our slates clean in order to wrap up the end of the Roman year. With revived energy, we can start the new year afresh inspired and with redemptive breath. We have relieved ourselves of the weight of the year prior through the practice of forgiveness and can set things right now with levity in our souls. The Judgment card reminds us that in this state, there can be no action that does not derive from inner divinity. Our highest self is born into their most aligned life, without renouncing the lessons of the past. The spirit alchemizes the material into the divine. From this higher residing energy of the month, we can act confidently, knowing that what we do will be in our highest good.

Love: Two of Wands ~Muse - Lucius~

It seems we are meant to receive the exact same message about love that we did last month–the Two of Wands. This month, it speaks to us a little differently. Aside from practicing divine love through external creativity and actions, we are also asked to apply this back to romantic love. In love, we experience an overlapping of two consciousnesses or powers. Both should be on the same team and supporting each other’s highest path. Love asks us to expand as our partner expands, and that love continues to grow when we nurture our interests. We are being asked to expand our horizons in favor of long-term goals, through small but consistent changes in our routines and lives in support of those goals. Inspiration meets action in this card, and we may find ourselves thinking of joint travels, moving, or joining a particular program down the line. What is most important here is that we find divine inspiration in ourselves–as well as that of our partner. Continual exploration is pivotal when encountering the “muse” we find in each other.

Money: Strength ~Strength- Moonchild~

It took willpower to practice inner cleansing last month. This month that energy is continued and embodied in the form of Strength, which prepares us for battle. This card reminds us that we are not merely at the mercy of the Wheel; we can in fact take control of situations. If money is tight or we would like to save more, this card advises us not to get rid of our desires or lower instincts. Rather, we are asked to transmute them. They can be used to motivate us or to help develop our subconscious psyche. Spending too much money on vacations for example can be transmuted into something that motivates us to get through our work day or motivates us to find a higher paying job. It can be a lighthouse that gives us strength to go on through an otherwise Sisyphean lifestyle. Allotting a lot of money for food can be transmuted into taking an interest in healthy foods which then reduces costs in healthcare further down the line.

Work: Reverse Knight of Pentacles ~Short Change Hero - The Heavy~

In work, we will likely be feeling ungrounded and misguided. We may be feeling stuck in a Sisyphean pattern, bored, or distracting ourselves with perfectionism. We are chasing a false sun that does not truly or fully address our inner needs. Likely we started out with higher ideals that degenerated over time and now we simply follow the path because it’s what we already laid out for ourselves. It is time to reevaluate –are we running away from something? Trying to please others? Faking it until we make it? It is time to find an ideal in which we can more suitably ground ourselves at work, and to follow a path updated to our current needs.

Health: Reverse Queen of Pentacles ~Bloodbuzz Ohio - The Nationals~

This month, there is a sense of lack of being able to provide for all our health needs. When it comes to providing all we envision, it is like a coin slipping out of our hands that leaves us feeling ungrounded. This could look like struggling to put enough food on the table, getting all the nutrients we need, or not being able to sign up for a class or trainer that we’ve felt called to. This could look like feeling deterred from seeing a doctor because of high out-of-pocket expenses, and delaying an appointment perpetually even though deep down we know we should not be disregarding the discomfort that our bodies tell us we are in. It may even be a psychological block that keeps us from meeting these needs. Whatever it is, we are asked to confront the issue head on so that we are properly able to care for ourselves the way we know we deserve.

Spirit: Two of Swords ~Pattern Doubt - Young Jesus~

Our spirits will likely struggle greatly at doing a thorough spring cleaning on a literal and metaphorical level. There is a finality involved in letting go of certain things even if we know they are not the best for us, or that we don’t need them anymore. It is one thing to identify what we need to let go of and to put them into a donation box…and quite another to slip them through the donation bin. It is one thing to determine that we need to let go of a connection or a job and cut cords with it…it is another thing to leave entirely. There may be contradictory values like loyalty and freedom for something new that may leave us at an impasse. It will be challenging, but it is work worth doing. Ultimately cutting ourselves free will create the space we need for our divine actions to take hold.

Happy Spring Cleaning!
