7th- Harvest Moon in Pisces, full lunar eclipse
16th- Mexican Independence Day
21st- New Moon in Virgo, Partial Solar Eclipse
21st-22nd- Mabon, Fall Equinox
The air crackles with anticipation. It is all abuzz with energy on the brink of becoming. The water on the stove has just broken into a boil, to be poured into a cup of tea, ready to steep. The tea is an infusion of dried apple slices and cinnamon bark, just purchased at the orchard. It serves as a memento for a time of gathering–a gathering of friends, and of ripe apples beckoning to be plucked. After a full day of work, frolic, and play, it is time to don slippers, and settle into an armchair with a warm blanket. From here, one can observe with satisfaction how the sun sets into a melting pot of yellow, orange and purple bleeding into one another. These restorative creature comforts provide necessary moments of respite that ennoble us to take on the next day with renewed vigor.
A week into September, the Harvest Moon in Pisces and the full lunar eclipse opens a unique opportunity to release old traumas weighing down the subconscious, and reap the full benefits of the lessons learned this year. The combination of these forces can bring about clarity of how we can best enter the soft, dreamy, intuitive energy of Pisces that our soul craves in this timespace. Mid-month, there is a resurgence of vitality, found in Mexican Independence Day. An effort long since won is remembered with the sharpness of today. We remember all we have fought for, and celebrate all the liberation we have achieved thus far in our lives. The 21st brings the New Moon in Virgo, in which we can redouble our practical efforts to fulfill the dream of the Harvest Moon. There will also be a partial solar eclipse, which spurs reflection on conscious external pressures we’ll want to challenge. Finally, on the 21st-22nd, Mabon, the Fall Equinox, takes place, which balances the energy of light and shadow, momentum and rest, and encourages gratitude for our bounty.
Below, we use a September spread from Rachel Kettler.
As we transition into fall, what can be shed that’s no longer serving me? Reverse 9 of Swords
In August, we were working at releasing the 9 of Swords. Now, it is time to shed it fully. Like the monarch butterfly still within its chrysalis, we find ourselves at a crux. For we retain all the old fears and traumas of the caterpillar, which keep us in a state of trepidation instead of an eagerness to emerge. The chrysalis for us symbolizes safety, but to remain within inhibits growth. It is time to shed old anxieties and ways of overthinking, to come out and fly. For the monarch born in September is of the Methuselah generation, and it has a very long, three thousand mile journey ahead of it. There is much to be done in this upcoming gestational nine-month period of our lives. This time will feel solitary but true, until we have another migrational period ahead of us anew.
What should I reap and harvest more of in my life? Reverse World and Reverse 7 of Swords
There are two areas of life we should reap and harvest more this month. To begin, the reverse World indicates that we need to celebrate ourselves more often–the raw, true authentic self that wants and begins to emerge (our monarch butterfly out of the chrysalis stage). This is such a brave and powerful position to act from, in tandem with the universal consciousness. Our guides suggest this part of ourselves needs to be divinely protected, encouraged, and granted the utmost compassion and love, so that it can continue to bloom into its fullest expression. It needs our validation, and it needs a reward system so it can sustain motivation. This self needs to feel empowered as possible, so that it does not shy away back into the chrysalis. It needs this long enough for it to witness the miracle that occurs when it is grounded from this space. Then it will see what it is capable of on the three thousand mile journey.
The reverse 7 of Swords implies that we need to reap more from our work on internal boundaries. We may have to find ways to “outsmart” or “trick” ourselves into reaching our desired goals (always acting within integrity). As we increase our skill, a more sustainable approach will be to get raw and honest with the self, using strong rhetoric and appeal to convince ourselves to get on board with embodying the World. This is an inward journey, in which we will use the 7 of Swords to parry with and confront the 9 of Swords aspect that tends to take hold of our minds.
Where can I benefit from having more balance? 8 of Swords
In the Marseilles version of this card (which we use today), there is a star in the center of what appears to be the psychological version of a maximum security prison (an intensified version of our chrysalis). The act of emergence is the way out, but we may doubt our ability or desire to do so when we become too identified with our mental entrapments, as if they formed a vital part of our personage. Our guides remind us: you are a star. A brilliant, magnificent being whose light is only diffused by its own thinking. The bars that appear to hold us back are of our own making and enforcement, but there is nothing to stop us from dismantling them. And if we can weave something so thick and intricate to our own detriment, imagine what vibrant tapestries we could create to our personal benefit?
What messages am I receiving from my unconscious? The Sun
Step out into the sun. Spread your wings under its vitalizing light. You are renewed–and you will meet yourself and as your own long lost twin. Flight may at first feel uncertain, given your former life as a crawling caterpillar, but as you grow accustomed to this act, you rejoice in what can be done. Don’t be afraid to reach out for assistance and encouragement during your growing pains, but know that you were born to do this. You are a creature of the light, diurnal in nature, meant to spread positive influence. You can help others emerge from the chrysalis, just as others have helped you. This is the nature of your soul’s fulfillment.
What area in my life needs attention and organizing? Reverse Page of Swords
There is much we can do in September, but above all we must learn how to manage our time. We are advised to be wise with how we use up our limited time. Will we spend the month blindly feeling about for the direction in which we must go, before we are finally to emerge from the chrysalis? Or, can we be open to the possibility of learning by doing? Much like the realm of chess, there is only so much we can learn through reading and theory. We must not mistake this knowledge with knowing all there is–eventually we must play a game and learn through real practice. It is the same with taking flight–we can only go so far by watching others, or having others explain what we must do. Eventually, we must simply try things out for ourselves. The sooner we can do this, the more practiced we will become.
